In August 27, 2008, MEG contracted with a baryte producer and exported baryte crushing plant to Kenya. The total contract is worth about 650 million dollar.This crushing plant consists of one primary jaw crusher, two secondary hydraulic cone crusher, vibrating feeder, vibrating screen and belt conveyors. Kenya intends to partner with international companies in an effort to accelerate coal exploration and development.

Surveys have indicated that the country is endowed with vast deposits of coal, which could assist the East African economic powerhouse in diversifying its energy sources.

The Kenyan government has created four coal blocks in the Mui basin, some 180 km north-east of Nairobi, which it intends to lease to prospective investors. The four blocks cover an area of 490,5 km2.

“Government intends to concession coal blocks within the Mui basin for the purpose of exploration, exploitation and development,” says Ministry of Energy permanent secretary Patrick Nyoike.

The move comes soon after British company Goldplat discovered gold deposits in western Kenya that could be mined on a medium-scale basis for 15 years.

According to Nyoike, a total of 62 wells have been drilled in the Mui basin to depths ranging from 75 m to 445 m, with the thickness of the coal seams intercepted varying from 0,3 m to 13 m.
Sample analysis shows the coal is sub-bituminous, bituminous and lignite, with an average calorific value of 15 MJ/kg.

To accelerate the exploration, the government of Kenya is inviting international companies to carry out further drilling and detailed analysis of the coal seams and determine the quantities available.

Companies interested must have vast experience in coal exploration and mining, must boast a capital base of $50-million and an annual turnover of over $50-million and demonstrate the capability to raise funds in excess of $100-million for investment.

This is the third time the Kenya government is seeking private partners for resource projects. Two previous attempts were not successful.

Coal is being touted as a viable alternative energy to cushion the country’s economy against the effects of escalating global oil prices and the vulnerability caused by hydroelectric sources prone to the vagaries of changing weather patterns.
